ECRA Loss Prevention Workshop Provides Valuable Perspective

ECRA's Loss Prevention Forum consists of a gorup of companies who have been working together for three years in developing many tools and resources for the FMCG industry to assist in efforts to fight ‘shrinkage’ - primarily focussing on reducing theft of product in store.

Forum members have been working to determine the potential for a research project designed to provide clear understanding of the loss risks associated with new and emerging shopper technologies, with a focus on Self Scanning Checkouts and Mobile Payment technologies.

The project, Staying ahead of the Game - managing the impact of technology on loss, commenced with a workshop in Sydney on 9 May. It was attended by 25 industry experts across retail, supply, service and equipment providers and leading academics from Australian National University and NSW University of Technology.

The objective was to use the industry experts to establish the commonalities and differences across a wide variety of retail environments regarding shrink at Self Service Checkouts and through the use of mobile payment technologies. The workshop focussed on current experience and future concerns. It provided the academics valuable insight into developing a robust methodology; agreed process; required resourcing; and deliverables for the next stage of the proposed project.

The academics have been tasked with providing a comprehensive report on the outcomes of the workshop. Should the project proceed the proposed output will be a toolbox designed to assist retailers in implementing and managing new and future technologies.

Spotlight on Publications: The ECA On-Shelf Availability Road Map

Where companies determine a priority to improve On-Shelf Availability (OSA), it’s beneficial to support this goal with a framework for improvement. The ECR Australasia OSA Improvement Road Map is intended for use as a manual and describes the activities that need to be undertaken to develop projects to improve OSA.  It also provides an objective common language to aid communication between business partners aiming to mutually resolve out of stock (OOS) issues.

The OSA Improvement Road Map offers an easy-to-follow framework built around a series of sequential steps, supported with information, tools and tips to address potential issues that may be encountered. As well as providing the basis for a project-based approach to OSA, the framework recognises the need for ongoing improvement and is also applicable as a continuous improvement loop.

The OSA Road Map will help clarify a staged approach to improving OSA. It also provides structure to the ensuing work effort and provides guidance around key project components for people involved.

The ECRA OSA Road Map can be accessed on-line via the ECRA website here.

The Food and Grocery Executive Program is a fully residential business school style executive program with a unique blend of skill development, industry learning and networking led by world class teachers alongside industry experts. The program has limited places available (no more than 36) and participants come from throughout the industry supply chain.

The faculty work with participants intensively in small groups and are available for individual discussions throughout the week to create the kind of learning experience that makes a real difference. During the week delegates are rotated through different syndicate groups to facilitate networking opportunities and increase exposure to the experiences, ideas and opinions of others in the industry. Participants will examine a range of management and industry issues from the varying perspectives across the supply chain and develop winning business strategies for today's global food and grocery industry from the best in the industry.
